McKinley Park Upgrades

Jul 30, 2009

When Metro Parks' staff worked with residents to develop the Master Plan priorities for improvements at McKinley Park, accessibility and safety topped the list. Thanks to the  voter approved 2005 Park Improvement Bond, the park, which has been part of the landscape of Tacoma's east side since 1901, was updated with those goals in mind. The hillside was re-graded in order to replace the steeply sloped and difficult to access pathways with a well-lit, street-grade promenade.

The new design offers complete visibility along the walk which runs the full length of the park. A stately new entrance at the top of the promenade invites visitors to stroll the scenic path overlooking the forest below. Skates spots and dots were added to provide a range of  opportunities for both beginners and skilled skaters to enjoy hours of active recreation. The large new children's play areas include elements that even big kids can't resist. New restrooms were also added to the signature community park. McKinley Park is located at 907 Upper Park St. in Tacoma's Dome District.
