Improvements continuing at Wapato Park
The public is invited to the Wapato Park Bathhouse from 4:30-7:30 pm on Thursday, September 10 to meet park planners and Steering Committee members and review the plans for improvements to the Park.

Metro Parks staff and the Park Board have been working with citizens and a Project Steering Committee over the past year to define specific improvements that will be funded through capital park bond funds approved by Tacoma voters in 2005. With these funds and several grants from the State of Washington, we are now in the design phase of a second phase capital project. The improvements will include the following elements:

  • Development of an off-leash facility to serve pet owners.
  • Improvements to the pedestrian walkway system around the lake.
  • Additional improvements to the lake edge to improve water access while enhancing water quality.
  • Removal of the north parking lot and replacement with a new lot that is set back from the lakeshore.
  • Improvements to parking areas and drives to repair deteriorated pavement and improve water quality.
  • Improvements to site utilities including a new water/fire service.
  • Improvements to the south restroom building.
  • New site lighting.
  • Landscape planting and irrigation.

The current capital project will not provide all of the improvements the community would like for Wapato Park. A future phase of development has been identified to include development of picnic areas, a new sprayground/playground, a new picnic shelter and additional landscape and trail work. Funding for Phase 3 development has not yet been secured.
