Replacement of Alling Park play equipment nearly complete
Sep 30, 2009

On July 18, in just a few short minutes, vandals destroyed efforts that had taken the South End Neighborhood Council nearly five years to achieve.
Prior to passage of the 2005 Park Improvement Bond, dedicated members of the South End Neighborhood Council began an active campaign to replace the aging play equipment at Alling Park. The council made a generous donation of the new play equipment for installation to coincide with other improvements which were completed this summer as part of the bond.
When the park reopened, it became a draw for children and families throughout the neighborhood. The play equipment was in constant use, until an intentional fire set the unit ablaze just a few short weeks later. The structure was a total loss.
To see so many years of hard work on the part of those dedicated neighborhood leaders and so many summer childhood memories stolen away by such a senseless act was devastating. But, neighbors and Metro Parks have overcome difficult times together in the past and teamed up to quickly to replace the playground.
Working with the South End Neighborhood Council, park planning staff met with the community to select replacement equipment. The board of park commissioners authorized the purchase of the replacement to happen concurrently as staff worked through insurance claims, and the neighborhood council launched an effort to help the park district defray its cost for the insurance deductible.
Installation of the new playground is underway and anticipated to be completed in early October.
