Our commitment to accessibility and inclusion

Oct 30, 2009

Metro Parks Tacoma is committed to creating accessible and inclusive park and recreation experiences.

We are currently enhancing our commitment to the American's With Disabilities Act (ADA) enacted almost 20 years ago.

We've revisited the agency's self-evaluation performed by staff in the early 90's and determined a need to reassess the organization's policies, practices and facilities.

You can be a part of our review process by participating in one of three forums taking place in early November during which we are seeking community input about our recently completed work.

Results of our current review have been recorded in an Agency Compliance Manual to reiterate Metro Parks Tacoma's standards, and communicate the expectation for inclusion and accessibility throughout the district's programs and facilities.  This manual is a key element of our strategy to make inclusion and accessibility standard components of program and facility decisions. It is available on our website, along with our Inclusion, Diversity and Accessibility policy which was adopted by the Board of Park Commissioners earlier this year.

Join us for one of our three public forums, November 3-5, during which we will take comments on the Agency Compliance Manual.

Forums will take place in the Metro Parks Tacoma Board Room at the following times:

Nov. 3 from 4-5:30 pm
Nov. 4 from 11:30 am -1 pm
Nov. 5 from 6:30-8 pm

Following these forums we will perform audits of Ruston Way, Point Defiance Park, Northwest Trek and other regional and signature facilities, completing the full inventory of park district locations by the end of 2009.
