New recreational opportunities designed specifically for youth with disabilities

Metro Parks' Specialized Recreation program, which has served people with disabilities for more than 55 years, is expanding its services to provide new recreational opportunities designed specifically for youth age 14 and under.

 

After seeing a large influx of younger participants within current Specialized Recreation programs, staff responded by tailoring a new mix of activities with this young audience in mind. Combining ideas from the public along with experience and knowledge from staff programmers, an assortment of activities including miniature golf, swimming, bowling, multimedia art and a series of socials has been developed to provide summer fun for our growing group of youth participants. New Summertime Specialized Recreation Programs for Youth 14 and under:

 

Artistic Creation

This fun intro to art class will give participants the opportunity to express themselves through the arts. Metro Parks Tacoma will be bringing in local talented artists as instructors to help participants find their artistic side. The group will be working on several multimedia projects that explore cultures from all over the world. Roll up your sleeves and let’s create something amazing. The final day of class will be a showcase of the artist work for friends and family in the community.

Rockin’ Drop In!

Swing in for this great new social club that is geared for a younger audience. We will be playing games, Wii, enjoying the spray ground, and participating in the arts. Come with a friend, or meet some new ones!

Busin’ it to the museum

Hop on the bus with the crew as we take Tacoma’s Public Transportation downtown to experience the City of Destiny’s finest Museums.

Putting around dinner...

Grab your game face and head to South Park where the crew will then roll out to Parkland Putters for some old school small ball. Now don't forget about dinner. The group will be stopping at one of our local eateries for a tasty meal. Please meet at South Park Community Center no earlier than 4:30pm with $25 for puttin and dinner.

Summer’s over splash down!

The bad news is school is right around the corner…. The good news is we have one last day to pool party it up with our friends! The crew will be meeting at Stewart Heights Pool where we will be having a bag lunch picnic. After we eat we will get ready for the countdown to splash off!!!! We'll jump in a pool that offers zero depth entry, waterslides, a lazy river, and a spray ground. Register with a friend, or come and meet some new ones! Please meet at Stewart Heights no earlier than one half hour before the outing. Please bring a bag lunch, water, and swim gear. Admission is covered in program cost.

Grab your game face and head over to Pacific Lanes for an all out fun feast. We'll be suckin down milkshakes and bacon cheese burgers only to get fueled up for a little bowling. We will test our skills at this hot new craze that's sweeping the nation! Yeah BOWLING!!! Please meet at Pacific lanes no earlier than 12pm with $20 for bowling and lunch. Pacific Lanes @7015 S.
