No show in 2009.
Thanks to all our visitors and participants for a great four year run.
Stay Involved!
There's a multitude of ways to stay involved in supporting Point Defiance Park as well as other parks and programs within Metro Parks Tacoma.
Volunteer in one of the many Gardens
Gardens have always been an important feature of Point Defiance Park. The first gardens were located near the Lodge and the first formal garden, devoted to roses, stands today in the same place it did when it was created in 1895.
- 2005 PDFGS proceeds funded a plant identification program, with ID plaques in the eight Point Defiance gardens.
- 2006 PDFGS proceeds purchased a T190 Bobcat Compact Track Loader for the park that helped with park restoration following recent terrible winter storms.
- 2007 & 2008 PDFGS proceeds are helping to develop 'Ebenezer's Heritage Garden' in the area surrounding the Lodge at Point Defiance (landscape restoration with historically accurate plantings and appropriate native plants; new pathways connecting the Lodge with other park venues, and a new event lawn)
Other Volunteer Opportunities
Point Defiance Flower & Garden Show
2008 Event PhotosWe established this show in 1995 to create a centennial celebration event fitting for Tacoma's 702-acre jewel. Thanks to you and a multitude of other volunteers, the Point Defiance Flower and Garden Show has consistently earned rave reviews from gardening experts who likened it to the famed Chelsea Flower Show in England. During the last 4 years we more than accomplished the goal we set out to achieve.
There is much to celebrate about the Point Defiance Flower and Garden Show. From the proceeds which have been invested in the park, to the many visitors we have attracted to Tacoma, this show has truly been a community success.
We wanted to let you know as early as possible that Point Defiance Flower and Garden Show Board has decided to discontinue producing the show in 2009. While we are grateful for the community enthusiasm that encouraged us to continue for three years longer than originally anticipated, we no longer believe it is viable for our organization to continue producing an annual event of this magnitude.
Thank you for your dedication. Our work together has been of great benefit to our community. We know our patrons, sponsors and show guests will remain passionately involved in supporting Point Defiance Park and her magnificent public gardens. Metro Parks offers a host of volunteer activities both for those who enjoy horticulture and those who are energized by special events.
