Special Olympics/Sports

Special Olympics is a fitness and sport-training program. Participation on competitive teams will be based on meeting minimum skills, attendance and ability of volunteer coaches. Enrollment limits have been set for each sport.

We offer the following Special Olympics sports teams for people with special needs:

  • Golf begins June 14, 2010
    Regional golf tournament: Sunday, August 1
  • Bowling begins Sept 2010
  • Softball begins June 10, 2010

  • Soccer begins March 13, 2010

  • Basketball  begins Nov. 2010
  • Volleyball  begins Sept 2010
  • Track & Field begins Mar. 16, 2010 

To get involved:

  1. Call 253-591-5314 for a registration form and a Special Olympic Application for Participation.
  2. Schedule a physical exam with your doctor. Return completed forms with sports fee.
  3. Begin training. Each sport is contingent on minimum participation.
  4. Application for Participation must be filled out every three years. Please print and return to the Specialized Recreation office. Click here to print.

To volunteer:
Winter – Basketball (November-March)
Spring – Soccer, Track & Field (March-June)
Summer – Golf, Softball (June-August)
Fall – Volleyball & Bowling (September-October)

Age:
Children 10 and under are not eligible to volunteer, however they CAN participate as a unified partner. (unified partner is someone without a disability playing on the same team as an athlete with a disability. Usually they are on teams that compete at a higher level).
Youth 11-13 are welcome to volunteer for some positions, however, they need to be accompanied by an adult.
Teens 14-17 are eligible to volunteer for select positions.
