Tidal Pool

Artist: Betz Bernhard

Medium: Concrete with glass tile

Dimensions: 12 feet by 16 inches

Location: Knox Park, Fire Station No. 5, along the Ruston Way waterfront

Date: 1981

Historical Background: Betz Bernahrd was one of 18 artists who applied for the job of designing art for the Ruston Way Fire Station. She used the shoreline of Ruston Way as inspiration and backdrop for her whimsical, oversized remaking of the seashells, sand dollars and stones found in tidal pools.

The sculptures, completed in 1981, were made by pouring fiberglass-tinged cement over foam and wire mesh molds in the shaped of a snail shell, sand dollar and three other seashells. Purple, blue and coral stained glass coats the shells in mosaic patterns. The City of Tacoma's 1% Arts Project paid for the artwork.
