McKinley Park
A gift to the City in 1901 by the Tacoma Land and Improvement Company, McKinley Park was named in honor of President McKinley. Covered by native trees, vines, and wild grass, the development of the area for public park use was relatively slow. Paths were eventually constructed, shrubs and flowers planted, and a natural spring was utilized to supply a lily and goldfish pond. A wading pool, volleyball and handball courts were constructed in 1937. The park quickly became a City-wide and regional attraction and remained popular until the early sixties and the construction of Interstate Five. This adjacent freeway construction replaced a number of attractions and eliminated some of the park's appeal. McKinley currently has many great prospects to offer the neighborhood such as picnicking, trails and other passive activities.

History of McKinley Park
The final Master Plan for McKinley Park was presented to the Board of Park Commissioners September 27, 2004. The plan focuses on improvements that would increase safety, create a gateway to the City, provide a connection to the Dome District and increase community activity in the park. From the historic forests to the new entry plaza, visitors will be able to walk and sit and enjoy beautiful views and changeable artwork. And for those that want more activity, there will be new walking trails, skate/bike plaza, playground and climbing rock. A restroom will be located at each end of the park. The work will be done in phases as funding resources are secured.
