Phase 2: Separate funding is being pursued for the playground, sprayground and restroom remodel. Phase 2 is currently underway.
Phase 1: Improvements created a longer view of the park and featured design elements that improve safety and security: the south entry and bowling green, north entry, renovation of the maintenance building, relocation of the basketball court and renovation of the pond. Phase 1 was completed and a reopening celebration held on May 10, 2008.

Phase 2: This project is expected to cost $1,400,000. Current funding includes $138,553 from 2005 UTGO Bond Funds and a $100,000 Starbucks Grant received by the Greater Metro Parks Foundation. A fundraising effort is now in progress through the
Greater Metro Parks Foundation as part of the
Zina Linnik Project at Wright and McCarver Parks.
Phase 1: The Parks Improvement Bond Measure, approved by the citizens of Tacoma in November of 2005, provided $4,000,000 for Phase I.

Phase II - Play 'n Sprayground New play and sprayground as well as a comprehensive set of improvements in the play and sprayground area including lighting, pathway work and a sign package (directional/informational graphics).
More specifically: • demolition of the restroom / wading pool completed in-house • new sprayground water feature of approx. 4000sf • new play areas serving 2-5 year old and 5-12 year old children plus swings with a total area of approx. 9600sf • concrete plaza area • landscaping • lighting • site furnishings, trash, tables, benches, bike rack • trail re-establishment and completion of park promenade • kiosk for wayfinding signage
Budget: Total funding is $2,080,796. This includes $150,796 in bond funds, $500,000 RCO Grant, and $1,430,000 from Greater Metro Parks Foundation.
Project Status 06/25/10 There are long leads on sprayground submittal elements. The contractor is clearing, grading and potholing for utility locations. 06/11/10 Mobilization began this week. Project fencing is installed. Tree removal began on June 10. 05/20/10 A pre-construction meeting is scheduled for June 1 with construction starting on June 7. 05/14/10 Work on site is expected to begin in June. 05/07/10 The contract is to be awarded at the Board meeting on Monday. The Phase One contractor is reviewing the problems with the lions and maiden statues. The paint is peeling and there is rust. Questions regarding responsibility between the General Contractor and masonry restoration contractor are emerging, but all are working to find a solution. 04/23/10 Bids were opened on 04/20. The project will be reviewed by the CIC on 04/28 with contract approval by the Park Board set for 05/10/10. 03/26/10 The project will advertise for bids next week. 02/05/10 As part of the Zina Linnik project, the Greater Metro Parks Foundation has chosen to have a fish stick added as a tie-in with McCarver Park. It will be located near the sprayground to blend with the tall spray features. An art piece of some sort on the restroom building will be incorporated to acknowledge donors. 01/29/10 Site Workshop is completing the bid package. We plan to advertise bids in March with construction begining in May or June. Contract docuents will include work-around provisions for Ethnic Fest and other programmed events in the park. The play surface is to be half chips and half rubberized surface. Much of the private funding will come from the Zina Linnik fund-raising campaign which includes Wright Park and McCarver Park. An earlier grant from Starbucks has been included in the Foundation's portion of the budget. Not all the privte funds have been raised at this point. 12/11/09 We are currently responding to questions from COT. 09/24/09 A building permit package was submitted to COT 09/15/09. 08/14/09 95% Construction Documents have been completed. A building permit package will be ready to submit to the COT in August 2009. 03/06/09 A 90% Technical Team review occurred on 02/26/09. MPT is continuing to develop comments. The remaining items to make the project bid-ready are building and health permits and securing funding. 01/23/09 A 50% Technical Team review occurred on 01/08/09. MPT is continuing to develop comments. 11/07/08 Sprayground equipment selections are complete. We're working with the Steering Committee to select playground equpment. A 50% Technical Team review will occur on December 18. 09/19/08 The design team has begun working on construction documents. Emphasis is on COT stormwater issues and Sprayground design with Vortex Company. 07/11/08 Design Development documents have been presented to MPT staff, Steering Committee, and CPG and comments have been received. The design team has begun working on construction documents. 05/30/08 Design services contract with Site Workshop is complete. A project kickoff meeting was scheduled for May 28. 02/29/08 We are planning to retain Site Workshop, the firm that designed Phase I, for Phase II design services. The agreement will include all work through the construction phase to the end of the project.

ADA/Inclusion An ADA Accessibility Survey has been completed and reviewed. The following accessibility elements will be included in the project design: accessible tables, benches with an armrest and compainin pads, and an accessible drinking fountain.

05/10/08 Re-Opening Celebration - View Flyer 04/24/08 Bates and Tacoma Power partner on Wright Park surveying project 12/27/07 The two lion statues were returned to new granite bases at the south end of Wright Park. Repairs were made while they were offsite and they will now receive another two coats of paint. Check out The News Tribune story.
