SW/NW Regional Special Olympics Golf Tournament
This is the 4th year Meadow Park has hosted this golf tournament.  If you choose to only volunteer for one event a year and you want to make a difference for someone who is grateful and SEE and immediate response this is an excellent opportunity.
Details: The golf tournament includes 18 and 9 hole play from the William's 9 to the championship course. Volunteers are requested to be score keepers on all holes being paired up with athletes from Whatcom to Clark County. Volunteer will also asked to be water runners, lunch runners and general helpers. The other part of the tournament is the skills competition for those golfers (about 75) who are not ready to play on the course. They will be tested in their skills from the short putt, long putt, chipping, pitching, and driving with irons and woods. Volunteers here will work actual stations and keep score, shag balls, be water runners and just general helpers.

As a volunteer you can expect to be hot, busy, and feel supercharged. You will receive a lunch for the day and probably more high 5's, and smiles than you can quantify. You will have the option to buy a summer sports classic t-shirt to help support the  Special Olympics organization (last year they were $11 bucks), the shirt design is on their website www.sowa.org if you are interested. And you may find yourself addicted to helping Special Olympic programs in general. If that is the case, I can provide you with ample opportunity to give back on a regular basis during the regular training season.
When: Sunday August 1st, at Meadow Park. Volunteer registration is at 8am, volunteer training is at 8:15am and the first events start at about 9am. Skills runs from about 10-2 and the 18 hole golfers go until about 4-5pm.

If you are interested and you would like more information, please feel free to either contact Kodi Smith Doty 591-5314 or Megan Hemingson with Special Olympics 206-829-7072 or read about it on the Special Olympics' website
If this sounds super awesome, but you have a wedding, baby shower, family reunion, camping trip, vacation or are otherwise occupied and you still want to give back you can help support the Metro Parks athletes with their year round training programs by making a financial donation to Metro Parks Foundation and marking Specialized Recreation in the memo section. We are growing by about 15-18% each year and are in need of additional uniforms and sports equipment.
Thank you for your support!

volunteers needed during the School Year
SPARX after school collaborative - Because after the bell counts! - View flyer
SPARX is an after school program for students in Tacoma's 11 public middle schools. The program provides a safe place for students to do academic and enrichment activities with caring adults. There are a number of opportunities such as visual and performing arts, sports and fitness, outdoor adventures and universal recreation that complement intramural sports and clubs offered by the school. This ensures that every middle school student has productive opportunities available to them every day of the week and on school breaks.

Mentors, tutors and activity leaders are needed after school, approximately from 2:30 to 4 pm one or more days a week. The time at each school is slightly different based on the bell schedule. Volunteers can work at one site or take a hobby/interest to multiple sites as available. Background check and minimum commitment is required. Types of activities:
- Tutoring
- General Recreation Mentor
- Activity Club Leader
- General Program Support
- Field Trip Chaperone
