What's Happening in Our Parks?

  • All fireworks are illegal in the City of Tacoma - view flyer - additional info
  • Note: No Fishing at Wapato Lake - On July 30, 2007, the Pierce County Health Department posted updated "No Fishing" signs at Wapato Lake.  Signs have been in place since March 24, 2006. Please observe the following advisories:
    • Do not catch or eat fish from the lake
    • Avoid contact with turtles and birds
    • Keep pets away from the water and dead animals.
For more information, please call the Tacoma Pierce County Health Department at 253-798-6470.
  • New spraygrounds make a big splash - Check out the new playgrounds with water features at Jefferson Park, McKinley Playfield, and South Park.
  • They're Ba Aaaah Aaaah Aaah ck!
270 goats (130 adults & 140 kids) continued clean up of invasive weeds at Blueberry Park July 16-21, 2007.
  • Graffiti on the rise - Executive Director Wilson reported that we have had an increase in graffiti over the last few weeks.  Parks with extensive tagging include: Cloverdale, Celebration, Owen Beach at Point Defiance, Portland, South End Neighborhood Center, Sheridan, Delong and Stewart Heights. Staff responds to graffiti incidents by taking documentation photos that are sent to the Tacoma Police Department for investigation. They have indicated that much of the graffiti we are experiencing is gang related. Notifying the Police with photo documentation helps them track gang activity in the City. Typically the parks staff will remove or paint over graffiti within 48 hours of discovery. Due to the volume of increased activity, response times may be somewhat slower than usual.
  • Bond Work Projects - In November 2005 the Metro Parks Tacoma $84.3 million bond measure passed with 62.38% of the votes. That means Tacoma citizens can look forward to plenty of activity in their parks in the coming years.
  • Small Works Roster - MPT may utilize the SWR to solicit bids from contractors for many of its smaller construction projects with a budget of $200,000 or less
  • Parks & Building Services Project Bids
