HISTORY
This 5.1 acre piece of land was established as Celebration Park in 1992. It was renamed Ryan's Park in 2009 by the Tacoma City Council. Ryan Alan Hade was seven years old on May 20, 1989 when a violent sex offender named Earl Kenneth Shriner molested and left him for dead in the park. In response, Washington adopted the Community Protection Act of 1990, the nation's first state law for the indefinite civil confinement of sexual predators. Shriner remains in prison. Ryan Hade died at age 23 on June 9, 2005 when his motorcycle collided with a pickup truck.
