HISTORY
This property was purchased from the City of Tacoma on January 19, 1961 for the cost of the unpaid LID assessment ($776.96). Vassault Park received its name from the street of the same name running along the west side of the park. The street was named for Ferdinand I. Vassault, the editor of the Tacoma News from 1891-1892.
PARK IMPROVEMENTS
2013 - Play Equipment Upgrade - New play equipment is being provided to replace old equipment that was removed due to safety compliance issues.
Project Status 05/21/13: A play equipment layout/design has been produced by equipment vendor Site Lines. The design uses the same footprint that currently exists and has play elements for the same age groups. Installation began May 21. We hope to complete installation by or before early June.

We are open to any comments and will be ordering play equipment on March 13. We anticipate approximately 5-6 weeks for delivery. During the next couple of weeks MPT will be removing all chips and preparing the site for equipment installation. We will install a drainage system along the east end to manage surface water. MPT staff will install 2-ADA ramps, one into the swings and the other into the new play area. The installation is scheduled upon delivery of equipment, early to mid-May. Playground open June 2013. |
2013-2015 - Dept. of Ecology Soil Remediation Program
Metro Parks is negotiating an inter-agency agreement with Ecology that generally covers the work to be accomplished and defines roles and responsibilities for each agency.
Project Status 12/14/12: Work will occur in the summer of 2014. At the same time, in a separate project, MPT would like to do drainage improvements, costing approx. $300,000 that we would pay for.
Project Manager: Department of Ecology (also paying for all of the work)
2010 - Testing for arsenic and lead associated with the Asarco Plume was completed. High levels of contamination was found throughout the fields. Options for clean up are being reviewed. Ecology will pay for the cleanup. Glen Rollins (Tacoma Pierce County Health Dept.) was responsible for testing and Amy Hargrove (Dept. of Ecology) is in charge of the cleanup program.
2008-2009 - Upgraded turf irrigation and drainage for soccer fields, new gates and fencing, new backstops and dugouts, new restroom and storage area, and parking lot lighting installed. Design was by Bruce Dees & Associates and contractor was Wade Perrow Construction. Work was funded by the Parks Improvement Bond Measure, approved by the citizens of Tacoma in November of 2005.
