Accreditation & Awards
Gold Medal Award
Metro Parks Tacoma, a Gold Medal winner in 1985 and 1992, was one of four finalists in its population category in 2017. This success is a direct result of the support we receive from the community and from our partnerships with other local agencies. Tacomans value their parks and we're proud to be able to provide award-winning levels of service.
We'd like to congratulate the winners of the National Gold Medal Awards for Excellence in Park and Recreation Management. The announcement was made on Tuesday, Sept. 26 at the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) conference in New Orleans.
- The Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA) recognizes park and recreation agencies for excellence in operation and service.
- Agency accreditation is available to all entities administering park and recreation systems, including municipalities, townships, counties, special districts and regional authorities, councils of government, schools, and military installations. Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium Accreditation
Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium (PDZA) is the only combined zoo and aquarium in the Pacific Northwest. The 29-acre zoological park was established in 1905, and attracts about 700,000 visitors a year. It is nationally accredited by the Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA) and the Alliance of Marine Mammal Parks and Aquariums (AMMPA), which ensure rigorously high standards of animal welfare, veterinary care, conservation, education and more.
Metro Parks Tacoma along with its volunteers and partners work hard to advance parks, recreation and environmental conservation efforts that advance the quality of life for all people.
Our awards highlight the efforts of those who go above and beyond to make a difference in the community.
