Spring Fling & Hilltop Health Fair
Saturday, February 24 (12:00pm - 4:00pm)
Free health services, carnival-style games, performers, hot meal and prizes offered
The Hilltop’s annual free celebration of health and wellness takes place Saturday, Feb. 24, from noon until 4 p.m. at the People’s Community Center, 1602 S. Martin Luther King Jr. Way.
The event, hosted by Metro Parks Tacoma for the better part of a decade, is a unique combination of free hygiene and health services, performances by Tacoma-area talented youth, carnival-style games, fitness demonstrations, and a free hot meal, plus free T-shirts, prizes and raffles.
The event spotlights dental and medical health, nutrition, fitness, plus emotional health and safety. Health fair sponsors are UnitedHealthCare Community Plan – whose Dr. Health E. Hound mascot will share in the festivities – and Community Health Care. Spring Fling community festivals are presented by Sound Credit Union at all Metro Parks community centers.
Vocalist E’majanay Morris-Mitchell will help kick off the afternoon program with her own rendition of “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” which has been called the African-American national anthem.
Other performers include the Lincoln High School and SOAR Academy dance teams, Hearts for Kids dancers, Northwest Tap Connection and the Jason Lee Middle School drum line.
Metro Parks Tacoma will present Ninja Kids and Zumba demonstrations. Michael Bradley, People’s Community Center supervisor, promises a bouncy house for kids, plus prizes for winners of carnival-style games including a bean bag throw, ring toss, horse shoes and bowling. Metro Parks also has made arrangements for face painting and a balloon artist.
- Free dental screenings and teeth cleaning.
- Free blood pressure checks will be provided by the Ebony Nurses Association of Tacoma.
- Volunteer barbers also will offer free haircuts.
- The Ladies Unlimited Social Club will cater a free hot meal.
Other likely participants include the Boeing Clown Club, Hilltop Urban Gardens, the City of Tacoma, the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department, the Tacoma Urban League and the Salvation Army Food Bank.
