Free naturalist-led beach walks provide education and fun

low tide beach exploration

Explore the Shore and Tiptoe through the Tidepools

Held at Titlow Beach and Owen Beach

Free naturalist-guided beach walks are scheduled during low tides at Owen Beach in Point Defiance Park and at Titlow Beach during July and August.

The events are part of Metro Parks Tacoma’s commitment to connect members of the community with nature.

Explore the Shore beach walks are conducted by the Conservation Engagement staff from Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium. Tiptoe Through the Tidepools will be conducted by education staff from Tacoma Nature Center.

All of the beach walks are designed to provide participants with a close-up and hands-on examination of the various tide pool animals revealed by very low tides. They are family friendly, but require walking some distance on rocky or uneven surfaces. Explore the Shore walks are recommended for ages 5 and up. Guests for both programs are advised to wear sturdy shoes and bring plenty of water and sunscreen.

Owen Beach is located in Point Defiance Park. Titlow Beach is located at the West End of 6th Avenue near Steamer’s Seafood Café.

Here’s the schedule for this summer’s Explore the Shore and Tiptoe through the Tidepools beach walks.
