In the early 1990s, what is now Neighbors Park was a single vacant lot with significant issues of blight and crime. In 1992, S 8th & I Street Neighbors leased an overgrown plot of land from an attorney for $1 per year. After neighbors testified of the need to the Metro Parks Board, Metro Parks agreed to place Neighbors' Park under their liability insurance. Read more about the history of Neighbors Park.

2006-2007 - Playground equipment was replaced and new swing was installed with a concrete curb enclosure, plantings and hardscape. Community garden was renovated - new park identification sign installed and a section of the timber retaining wall and brick walkway were reconstructed with a new matching concrete wall and pavers reset on a gravel base. Work was funded by the Parks Improvement Bond Measure, approved by the citizens of Tacoma in November of 2005 and financial partners Starbucks, Northwest Insurance Council, Ben B. Cheney Foundation, Rotary Club of Tacoma No. 8, Seattle Seahawks, Martin Luther King Housing Development Association and New Tacoma Neighborhood Council. Community Partners (donating goods, materials, services or volunteer labor) were Home Depot/Team Depot, Starbucks, Kompan Inc, Bellevue Healthcare, Lukenbills Landscape Company, Aabergs, Abodes, Harmon Pub & Brewery, Glacier Northwest, DOC Work Crew, Top Food and Drug, Calendula Nursery & Gallery, Stadium Thriftway, Knecht Brothers Construction, Kain-Bauer Properties and Costco.
