Master Plan Development Builds on Past for Sustainable Future
Over the past century, Point Defiance Park has become a local treasure and regional and national destination for over 3.1 million visitors annually. Metro Parks Tacoma wants to ensure the park remains an active and relevant natural resource for the next century.
With input from public studies and community conversations, Metro Parks Tacoma approved a community-developed Concept Plan to enhance the experience and honor the character of Point Defiance Park by:
- Preserving its natural resources and distinct atmosphere
- Prioritizing pedestrian and non-motorized access
- Creating year-round activities and attractions
The Concept Plan has led to Destination Point Defiance, a long-term comprehensive planning initiative to guide future capital projects. In 2015, Metro Parks will work with the community to finalize this plan into an updated Master Plan to steward, protect and enhance Point Defiance Park for the next 100 years.
We invite you to participate in the community process launching in 2015. Visit DestinationPointDefiance.org for more information about upcoming projects and master plan public meeting dates.
From rare old-growth forest to miles of Puget Sound beaches, from historic buildings to a world-class zoo and aquarium, Point Defiance Park offers endless opportunities to enjoy part of what makes Tacoma and the Pacific Northwest special.
Point Defiance Park is just one of the parks on the District’s 2015-2016 capital improvement work plan; the site will benefit from the initial burst of activity funded by the 2014 Park and Zoo Bond. Visit MetroParksTacoma.org/2014ParksZooBond for the full list of upcoming capital projects.
