Outer loop of Five Mile Drive reopens
December 21, 2016Water main break has been repaired
The outer loop of Point Defiance Park’s Five Mile Drive reopened to vehicular traffic Wednesday after crews fixed a break in a 6-inch water line.
The break, in a line linked to nearby fire hydrants, occurred Friday morning near the Vashon Viewpoint. Workers secured the line, which kept the popular scenic drive open to vehicles over the weekend. The loop was closed Monday and Tuesday to ensure safety as crews repaired the problem.
The break occurred near another that broke Dec. 13. That first break was fixed the following morning. The second break may have resulted from a change in water pressure when the line was turned back on, a park official said.
The outer loop portion of Five Mile Drive includes several scenic viewpoints and is a popular place to drive, bicycle and walk. It is normally closed to vehicular traffic until 10 a.m. Monday through Friday and until 1 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.
