Construction begins on new Eastside Community Center
June 14, 2017
Construction is starting!
We are excited to announce that the City of Tacoma granted the construction permits, and that means ... we are starting to build Tacoma's newest community center!
Korsmo Construction, the general contractor, has begun putting up fencing and staging the site. Dirt will start moving very soon. By the end of next summer, you won't have to #ImagineEastside because it will be built!
We still have a lot of work to do. We are cautiously optimistic that the Washington Legislature will come through with an important grant. We also need to raise millions of dollars to support our groundbreaking partnership with the Boys & Girls Clubs of South Puget Sound, which will more than double the number of kids they serve in East Tacoma. And local artists Christopher Jordan and Kenji Stoll are working with local youth to create an art strategy for the new center.
Operating and maintaining the new 55,000 square-foot center will require shifting staff and programming from the Portland Avenue Community Center, which is only about 7,400 square feet, as well as from the old Eastside Pool, which is housed on the campus of the shuttered Gault Middle School.
We will be spending the next few months talking with - and listening to - neighbors in the area as we consider the future of the Portland Avenue Community Center and Park.
As we have done with other projects throughout the city, we will use a number of tools to reach as many residents as possible so we can discuss options for continued services to the area. Our goal is to develop solutions that serve the needs of the neighborhood in a fiscally responsible and sustainable manner.
Upcoming Public Meetings
We are currently scheduling three public meetings in the neighborhood this summer. We will also mail notices to neighbors, attend meetings of neighborhood groups, use social media channels, and survey park and community center users. We want to hear from you before we take any recommendations to the Board of Park Commissioners for decisions.
The first community meeting will be
Thursday, June 29, from 6 to 8 pm
at Portland Avenue Community Center
We are planning additional meetings in July and August. (One of those will be on a Saturday.) Our intention is to learn from each other and identify possible solutions that meet the overall needs of the neighborhood.
We are grateful for all of the support and feedback from residents, donors, partner agencies, students, and everyone else who has contributed to the vision of an incredible place to gather, play, learn and grow in East Tacoma. Stay tuned for an invitation to an exciting construction celebration!
