New Point Defiance Park detours in effect at Pearl Street entrance

Metro Parks is working with the City of Tacoma and State Department of Transportation to smooth traffic flow at the park’s Pearl Street entrance by introducing a roundabout. Point Defiance Park and its attractions are open during construction.
 

Drivers: Expect new detours at Point Defiance Park’s Pearl Street entrance

Construction on the roundabout at Point Defiance Park’s Pearl Street entrance is going well. It’s going so well that it’s time for some new detours to be put into place. The detours will give works space to bring the project closer to completion by summer.

The park and all of its attractions are OPEN. Pedestrians, please follow the signs. If you drive into the park, please follow the signs and keep your speed LOW. Below is a summary of the changes and when they’ll begin if the weather cooperates. We’ll continue to post updates on DestinationPointDefiance.org:

Monday, April 16, to Friday, April 20

  • Entering the Park: Enter at Mildred Street. Or follow this detour at Pearl Street (shown as red arrows on map):
    • The existing turn into the park near the Information Kiosk will close.
    • Drive past the entrance toward the ferry terminal and take a left when you reach the bottom.
    • Drive past the restaurant.
    • When you reach the boathouse parking lot, take a left and follow the road under the bridge and up the hill.
    • To get to Five Mile Drive, Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium or Fort Nisqually, turn right.
    • To reach the Pagoda, Visitors Center, tennis courts or parking along the pond, go straight ahead. [shown as red arrows on map]
  • Exiting the Park: Leave the park either by via Mildred Street or from the Boathouse/Ferry. [see map with orange arrows]

Friday, April 20, to Sunday, April 22

  • Entering the Park: Enter at Mildred Street. Or follow this detour at Pearl Street (shown as red arrows on the  map):
    • The existing turn into the park near the Information Kiosk will close.
    • Drive past the entrance toward the ferry terminal and take a left when you reach the bottom.
    • Drive past the restaurant.
    • When you reach the boathouse parking lot, take a left and follow the road under the bridge and up the hill.
    • To get to Five Mile Drive, Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium or Fort Nisqually, turn right.
    • To reach the Pagoda, Visitors Center, tennis courts or parking along the pond, go straight ahead. [see red arrows on map]
  • Exiting the Park:  At 5 pm on April 20 drivers once again will be able to leave the park by driving around the pond and exiting directly onto Pearl Street. You may also exit via Mildred Street.

Monday, April 23 to Thursday, April 26

  • Road Closure: The road near the pond from Pearl Street to the Pagoda will close from April 23 to April 26. This means that for four days, there will be no vehicle access to the Pagoda, tennis courts, Visitors Center or the parking spaces on this side of the pond.
  • Entering the Park: Enter at Mildred Street. Or follow this detour at Pearl Street (shown as red arrows on the  map):
    • The existing turn into the park near the Information Kiosk will close.
    • Drive past the entrance toward the ferry terminal and take a left when you reach the bottom.
    • Drive past the restaurant.
    • When you reach the boathouse parking lot, take a left and follow the road under the bridge and up the hill.
    • To get to Five Mile Drive, Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium or Fort Nisqually, turn right.
    • To reach the Pagoda, Visitors Center, tennis courts or parking along the pond, go straight ahead. [see red arrows on map]
  • Exiting the Park: Drivers still can leave the park by driving on the other side of the pond and exiting onto Pearl Street. Or exit via Mildred Street.

Friday, April 27

  • Road Opens: Vehicle access restored to pond area. Southbound drivers leaving the ferry terminal will be able to turn right into the park just before Pearl Street. The road at this point may be either gravel or paved.
  • Entering the Park: Enter at Mildred Street, Pearl Street or the ferry road. Vehicle access restored to pond area.
  • Exiting the Park: Drivers can leave the park via Mildred Street, Pearl Street or the ferry road.

Make your visit a pleasant one

  • Visit early in the day. When sunny days fall on the weekend we see park useage spike. Be aware that traffic is most likely to back up later in the afternoon when park attractions are closing.
