Special Olympics & Sports

Special Olympics is a fitness and sport-training program. Participation on competitive teams will be based on meeting minimum skills, attendance and ability of volunteer coaches. Enrollment limits have been set for each sport.

SPORTS AND PROGRAMS
 
Soccer - March - May Saturdays at SERA multi sport complex.

Track & Field - March - May
Practices are on Tuesdays from 5:30-7pm at Gray Middle School (6229 S. Tyler St).

Aquatics - March - May
UPS Practice is Tuesday 6-7:30pm. PLU Practice is Monday 7-8:20pm.

Golf - June - August
Practices are Monday from 5-7 pm at Meadow Park Golf Course (7108 Lakewood Dr. W.). Tournaments are TBA.

FootGolf - July - August
Play at Meadow Park Golf Course. For ages 8 and up, all ability levels. Friends & family are welcome to register.

Softball - June - August
Practices are on Thursdays from 5:30-7:30 pm at Heidelberg Field (S. 19th & Tyler St.). Tournaments are TBA.

Bowling - August - October
Practices are on Mondays from 3:30-5 pm at Pacific Lanes (7015 S. D St). Bowling Regional tournament is TBA.

Basketball Nov - February

Flag Football - If you are interested in participating or volunteering for Special Olympics Flag Football, please email Beau (beaub@tacomaparks.com) or call (253) 404-3950.
PARTICIPATE:
  1. Prior to start of sport season, complete a registration form
  2. Download and print a Special Olympic Application for Participation (AFP).
  3. Schedule a physical exam with your doctor to fill out the AFP.
  4. Return completed forms (which need to be renewed every 3 years) with sports fee to Specialized Recreation at the STAR Center.
  5. Note that sports may require additional fees.
  6. Begin training.

Age guidelines for volunteers:
Children 10 and under are not eligible to volunteer, however they CAN participate as a unified partner. (unified partner is someone without a disability playing on the same team as an athlete with a disability. Usually they are on teams that compete at a higher level).

Youth 11-13 are welcome to volunteer for some positions, however, they need to be accompanied by an adult.

Teens 14-17 are eligible to volunteer for select positions.
